Care for dry porous hair

Any type of hair: oily, dry, normal, mixed needs daily care. Daily hair care is key to the health and beauty of your curls.

Hair care is a daily, complex, systematic work for a lifetime. You cannot take care of your hair for a month or three, and then hopes that they will be healthy all their life.

Dry hair often looks dull and lacks elasticity and shine. Dry hair is very tangled and difficult to comb, splits at the ends and breaks off, as a result of which it becomes porous.

Porous hair is a hair structure that can absorb any preparations like a sponge and then immediately give them away after washing.

Hair becomes porous when its top layer, the cuticle, is damaged. When the hair is healthy, shiny scales are tightly pressed together (like a tile on the roof of a house), when porous, the scales rise like in a pine cone, something like this:

Porous hair

Due to the fact that the scales are so open, all dirt, dust, styling agents penetrate deep into the hair, which subsequently leads to depletion and fragility of the hair.

Care for porous hair

How to care for dry, porous hair

Hair nourishment from the inside

Hair nutrition

- Drink 1.5-2 liters of pure water per day (in small portions), not juice, tea, compote, but not pure cold water. Firstly, the hair is less greasy at the roots, and secondly, it is very good for the length of the hair (the hair is not so dry, it is more nourished and a natural shine appears).

- Balance your diet: eat less fatty, smoked, fried, and focus on steamed, boiled or baked dishes, and do not forget about seasonal fruits and vegetables.

- To drink vitamins with courses, somewhere twice a year (early autumn and early spring), today pharmacies have a huge amount of various vitamins and dietary supplements.

- Do not forget to make homemade, homemade vitamins for hair, which will nourish and strengthen hair from the inside no worse than various dietary supplements for hair.

Scalp care

Scalp care

- Choice of shampoo. It is everyone's choice to choose shampoos without silicones, or made of silicones. But every shampoo contains surfactants - surfactants that remove impurities from the scalp and hair. Surfactants are aggressive substances, they destroy the protective surface of the hair, but it is from them that there is a thick foam in shampoos, which is well distributed through the hair and rinses it with both cold and hot water. Therefore, when choosing a shampoo, choose with SLS (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate, Sodium Laureth Sulfate - this is softer) TLS - they are more gentle than ALS (Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate, Ammonium Laureth Sulfate).

In choosing a shampoo, everything is very individual, and choosing the "right", suitable shampoo is possible only by trial and error.

- Have in your arsenal several shampoos (neutral, for frequent use; acid shampoo with a low pH level up to 6 - it is good for damaged hair; and one alkaline shampoo (pH greater than 7) for deep cleansing of the scalp and hair). When you start a hair strengthening course, you can do a special shampoo for hair loss according to the trichologist's prescription.

- Use once every two weeks deep cleaning shampoo (to wash everything that has accumulated from the hair: cosmetics, dirt, silicones). After such a shampoo, all masks work much better on the hair.

- Do not wash your hair with too hot water. The water should be at a comfortable temperature, and at the end you can rinse with cool water to smooth the scales.

- Do not wash all your hair with shampoo, just soap the roots, and when you wash off the shampoo from the head, it will flow through the hair and rinse the length of the hair.

- Do once a week salt peeling of the scalp.

- Once or twice a year (autumn, spring) with courses to strengthen the hair using different serums, tonics to strengthen the roots and hair loss.

Dry hair length care

Hair length care

Moisturize, supply and restore hair length with the help of purchased masks, balms, conditioners after each hair wash. Manufacturers spend millions of dollars on research, where specialists and scientists work. They invent many effective remedies to get rid of certain hair problems, so why not take advantage of this. Choose the best professional hair cosmetics, if possible, manufacturers of professional products are more responsible for the quality of their products. Try restoring, nourishing and moisturizing hair masks, masks from these series smooth out hair scales well, making them soft, elastic and shiny (store-bought masks, balms, conditioners should be applied only to the length of the hair, stepping back from the roots). When choosing masks, balms, pay attention to products with proteins, keratin, amino acids.

- Do “thoroughly” mask once a week. Take a good restorative purchased mask, apply it to damp (towel-dried) hair, insulate it with plastic wrap and a woolen hat (make an insulating cap) and warm it all up with a hairdryer, then warm it up for 5-8 minutes and let it cool for another 15 minutes, then rinse well with running water ... So the mask penetrates better into the hair itself and works many times better.

- You can rinse your hair with acidified water (2 tablespoons of vinegar per 1 liter of water or lemon juice), so the hair is less frizzy.

- Gently wring out the washed hair and pat dry with a towel - do not rub or curl it.

- Do not comb wet hair, but slightly damp and special combs. Also, you do not need to comb and touch them often. It is better to comb your hair well in front of the head wash, then after washing it will not be so tangled.

- Leave-in products: oils, serums, creams, fluids, crystals - is a mandatory step in the care of porous, dry hair.

- Try to exclude or minimize the use of a hair dryer, ironing, but if it does not work, then use good thermal protection (cream, spray or oil that prevent the hair from overheating). Also, do not dry your hair with too hot air and very close to the hair, you can dry your hair by about 80%, and then let it dry naturally (if there is time, usually we are always in a hurry somewhere).

- Use only clean combs, curlers, iron, stylers. Otherwise, residues of conditioners, modeling agents and sebum will drip onto the hair. It is advisable to wash the combs once a week with a mild shampoo, and wipe the iron and stylers with alcohol.

- Hide your hair from the cold and heat: in winter it is imperative to wear a hat, and in summer to protect it from ultraviolet radiation, so as not to damage them even more.

- If your hair is long, it is better to braid it, especially at night. Do not use thin elastic bands and metal hairpins, they strongly pull hair and they can break off.

- Trim the ends of the hair regularly.

I would also like to dwell on such care for dry, porous hair as natural oils.

In general, the modern beauty industry has presented not only a variety of cosmetics, but also technologies for treating skin, nails and hair. There are also diagnostic possibilities, for this you do not need to go to a hospital or clinic - large beauty centers offer this service. The visitor receives not a dry conclusion, but clear information and guidance to action. That is, it is possible to deal with hair problems not only by acting with folk methods and by intuition, but to approach the issue quite pointwise.

Natural oils for dry, porous hair

Hair care oilsBase oils are great helpers for long hair, especially dry and porous hair. The leader is Coconut oil, it is one of the few oils that penetrates the hair structure. Also suitable for dry porous hair oil: olive, avocado, jojoba, almond, wheat germ, argan, macadamia, hemp, linseed, broccoli, peach, camellia oil, shea butter, corn oil. Natural oils have a cumulative effect, and over time they will make hair more manageable and smoother.

Important! all oils that are used for hair must be cold pressed and of good quality, otherwise, it makes no sense to use them for hair, even if they do not harm, then there will be no benefit from them. Quality oils cannot be cheap.

Hair moisturizing mask

  • 1 teaspoon olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon argan oil (jojoba, avocado)

Mix all the oils in a glass dish and heat in a water bath, apply to the hair, stepping back from the roots, insulate and soak on the hair for an hour, then rinse thoroughly with shampoo and apply a light balm.

Hair mask for strengthening and shine

  • 1 tablespoon of brandy;
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 egg yolk;
  • 3-5 drops of vitamin A and E in oil.

Mix all ingredients in a glass container. Apply to scalp and hair before washing hair. The mask needs to be insulated (you can take a steam bath for a while), you need to keep it somewhere, from 40 minutes to 1 hour, then wash your head with two washings of shampoo.

These are just a few recipes for masks with oils, you can mix different oils, and bring out your ideal hair mask (share your recipes for oil masks).

Cons of oil masks

  • takes too long (plus we walk for two hours with a cap on our head, which is not very aesthetically pleasing if there is someone at home);
  • washes hair dye;
  • individual intolerance to oil.

Thank you for such a detailed answer, everything is laid out on the shelves, there is only one thing left to observe))

    • Yuliya

This is the most difficult thing, because we all seem to know this, but for some reason we do not observe it.

  2. Kate

    Yes this is true.

  3. Lily

A mask with flaxseed oil and vitamins A and E suits me well. I mix everything together and apply it on my hair, I try to keep it as long as possible sometimes and all night. As a result, the hair is much better in all proportions. And I have been doing this mask for only a month.

    • Irina

The mask is good, but after linseed oil, the hair smells like a son even after shampoo, conditioner and spray ((

  4. Dasha

Thank you very much for your advice, I learned a lot of new things and, most importantly, effective.

  5. Sasha

  8. Olga

Can we use flaxseed oil that we eat?

    • Yuliya

Yes, I do so, the main thing is that it is unrefined and cold pressed.

Hello ! Advise care! I have dry hair that is damaged and split along the entire length and also porous! I don't dye my hair, I drink vitamins, but there is no result! Hair grows slowly and not of high quality! Tatiana

    • Yuliya

Change care. It is best to choose professional hair cosmetics, these are regenerating lines, nourishing, and over time you will move on to lighter lines. Buy shampoo, mask and leave-in products and use the mask every time you wash.
In addition, you can drink a course of Omega-3, vitamins A and E, they increase the elasticity of the hair.

    • Maria

Do not leave vitamins, continue to drink in courses. There is a sense from them, just cumulative.
But as a care, I can advise from my own experience to switch to placental hair care. When hair is dry and porous it means it lacks vitamins and moisture. In this case, it is very good to add serum and liquid keratin to the hair diet. When I burned my hair with paint and "dry porosity" happened to them, I saved them with serum with ribonucleic acid - Formula Safe and liquid keratin Formula Silk.
This hairy couple works miracles. And the hair afterwards looks strong, shines, becomes elastic, and in general super-duper. To say the least.

  10. Irina

I read that porous hair has the ability to both absorb a large amount of the product (also oil), and when washing the head, the same amount of saturated hair is easily washed out. What should be done in such a situation? If this is true, is there any sense in such masks made from natural ingredients?

    • Yuliya

Masks are of course useful, because if you do not nourish and moisturize porous hair, it will be even more damaged. Also a mandatory item in care is the application of a mask after shampooing (for length) and it is better if these are professional masks.

    Very cool article) thanks!

  13. Irina

What does it mean: "FOR the prescription of a trichologist" ??? The article is very informative and useful for many !!! Thank you very much!))) But it would be much nicer to read an article that is written without errors. ((((

  14. Nadya

I am blonde, so my hair is often dyed and dry and porous over time. Moisturizing masks and hair polishing save the day, and lately I also began to take vitamins, called Natubiotin. Of course the hair looks better. They comb well and do not puff, they began to grow more actively. I like this result.

  15. Yuliya

I began to use oils, I have a blend of oils from horse force, it restores porous and damaged hair, nourishes and protects them.

    • Yuliya

      Thanks for sharing)
